A question car problems?

Ok. my brother has a gmc jimmy truck. I think he said a 96 or 97. It has 150,000+ miles. Anyway, he can start the truck, but when he shifts to drive and starts to give it some gas, the truck cuts off. He hasn't had any problems like this b4. Any ideas on the problem? I appreciate any help. Thanks!

Update:

It's an automatic and the check engine light comes on and flashes.

this sounds like the car does not have enough fuel pressure. Have him remove the air cleaner hose from the top center of the engine (at the throttle body) and spay some carb cleaner into the throttle while it is running- then see if it revs better. if it does, your not getting enough fuel and the car will more than likely need a new fuel pump. but yikes that repair is $600-$700.

A visit to a good shop will have proper diagnosis performed and the proper fixes applied as well.

Don't follow the guesses from the others.

Autozone and Pep Boys do NOT qualify as good diagnosis, either. We'll try to eradicate that myth ASAP.

Try to erase the "3 day cooling off period" myth for buying cars has been tough, so be patient.

are you sure its an automatic? i only ask this cause if its a manual then the clutch is probably the problem. if it is automatic there can be a few things the torque converter could be toast, there could also be any number of Censor problems. a friend of mine has a similar truck i will ask him what he thinks and get back to you.

Is there a check engine light on? How is the engine running at idle?

If there is a check engine light on, address that problem. It might be the reason why its stalling. You can go to your local Auto Zone and they will scan it for free.

check the fuel filter. it could so dirty it just lets enough thru to let it idle but not enough to run at speed
