Yes Windows media player can play those files. it can play just about any file with the right codec. I recommend going to www.download.com and searching codec. I forget what it is called but there is a package and when you get that you can pretty much play any type of file.

They can. I don't use Windows Media Player for avi files though.
A good alternative to Windows Media Player that is quite a versatile player is VLC Player.
But Windows Media Player works fine!
Have fun watching your movie.

VLC will play avi and just about any movie format:
VLC Download
WMP does not come with the codecs necessary to play those. You could download a codec pack and import it into WMP, but VLC comes with codecs installed within it and it is easier just to get VLC.

.avi is not a format in itself, it is just a container file. Whether or not a particular .avi file will play depends on whether the appropriate codec for that file is installed. Use avicodec (link below) to determine which codec is required for a particular file and whether this codec is installed on your computer.

yes it can but there are many variations of avi files and some will require a specific codec to make them work.
