New driver, motorway driving?
I passed my test last wednesday. (15th) Me and a friend have a road trip planned which should involve motorway driving. I don't know if I'm comfortable about driving on a motorway for the first time, as I'm really nervous. (Especially with recent events.) There is an alternative route, but I don't know if I'm just being silly?
I'm also worried about getting lost on the alternative route! I have a satnav but, they're not always reliable.
What should I do?
The journey is in less than a week.

Well done for passing your test! Dont worry about motorway driving. Yes it can be scary the first time however if its a road trip by the end of it you will be a pro.
Just stay calm and concentrate and you will be fine
Hope you have a good road trip!!

This has been discussed by the Government on a number of occasions. If a learner is not allowed on a motorway, how does that person get experience of motorway driving, do they take an extended course or do they just pick it up as the go along.after they pass their test. Motorway driving is no different than driving on some duel carriageways, centre reservations, slip roads, 70mph speed limit. I do understand that we can't let early learners onto the motorway system, but we could give them some experience once they have managed to get to a standard of driving that will not cause problems to other drivers.

Don't worry about it. You say "given recent events" and I assume you are referring to yesterday's crashes on the M6, but why do you think they were newsworthy? They were newsworthy because they were out of the ordinary - i.e. it doesn't happen that often.
If you're really uncomfortable on the motorway then take the alternative route by all means, but remember that nothing is 100% safe. That sounds negative and pessimistic, but really, what can you do that is 100% safe? Everything in life that is worth doing carries some risk.
I'm sure you will be fine on the motorway. Just remember to concentrate - you need to watch what other drivers are doing, not just think about what you're doing. Don't be afraid to tell your friend to shut up if he/she is distracting you, and to say that you can't drive with the radio on.
I'd advise that if possible, you go for a little run on the motorway near your home with an experienced driver before you head off on your trip. This will make you far more comfortable.

Congratulations
First can i recommend you start by driving from one entry to the next exit of a motorway to get some practice.
Second for the first time i would recommend you stay in the inner lane.
always remember to double your stopping distance give plenty of room between you and the car in front. In wet weather you need to increase this, it can be very difficult to keep a safe distance as there will always someone who will drive into the space in front of you. for your first time do not be tempted to go with the flow of traffic you could easily get caught out .you do not have the experience of driving at speed so do not drive at speed.
the usual tyres and tarmac rule does not apply here. If you have to overtake then make sure you use your mirrors and look over your shoulder at your blind spot many other cars on the motorway will be driving in your blind spot so keep an eye on that If in daub t don't overtake it really does not matter at this point. when entering onto the motorway get up to the speed of the traffic as soon as you can.
remember also when you leave the motorway you will be traveling at a much faster speed than the traffic on the exit road so please slow down as soon as you leave , you will be surprised at how fast you are going.
Just remember to keep an eye on your mirrors at all time and be aware of what and who is around you .
mostly relax stay at a sensible speed and if you start to panic then pull into a service station until you calm down
good luck.
But however i would not usually recommend driving on a motorway so soon after your test but if you have no choice then just play it as safe as possible
practice your dual carriageway driving first to give you some confidence
good luck and stay safe

First of all, congratulations. Does your friend drive already? If so, I'm sure he/she will support you. If you feel really uncomfortable, though, why ruin your trip with nerves? Go the pretty way. Later on, speak to your driving instructor about him giving you some motorway experience, it'll make a tremendous difference to your confidence.
Regarding your route, why not try a map? They tend to be more reliable . . . And with two of you, one can map-read as you go.
Have a good trip.

Don't worry, motorway driving is actually safer than driving on ordinary roads. Try to avoid the rush hour and tuck yourself into the inside lane until you feel more confident. Keep your distance, don't fall asleep and watch your speed (It's easy to gradually go faster & faster without realising it)
It's really no different to dual carriageways except there's the hard shoulder if you break down & a crash barrier which you won't need!

congratulations on passing your test
the first time you go on the motorway I think you'd find it comforting to have someone with you who's familiar with motorway driving ... if your friend drives maybe he/she could help you ... the suggestion of going back to your instructor for a session on motorway driving is good ... but if you can't afford it or he doesn't have time before you go, do you have any other friends or family who would go and drive down a motorway with you for a bit? ... when you first go on a motorway it can seem quite scary because you're not used to it, but I doubt it would take you long to get used to it
good luck and have a good time

you can go back to your driving instructor and ask him/her to take you for some motorway lessons, failing that take yourself on some short trips that you are familiar with until you build your confidence.
congratulations on passing your test x x x

Congrats on passing your test.
Have you ever driven on a duel carriageway? if so, a motorway isn't that different so don't worry and just enjoy the drive.

just be brave
always check your blind spot - very important
watch your speed , 2 offences n' thats your licence gone.
don't be bullied by people behind you.
give lorries plenty of space when overtaking, most of them aren't paying attention - and they tend to drift all over the place.
