I've had trouble coming up with stuff like this over the years but here are some things that have worked.
1) crochet women scarves out of that nice chenille yarn.
2) homemade biscotti (the one thing I can bake that even people on diets seem grateful for).
3) do you have kids? If so capitalize on things with there pictures/ hand-prints etc for grandparents and close relatives.
This year I decided on a theme--pajamas. I'm buying everyone pajamas. It saves a lot of time in trying to figure out what to get people, and I can save money by concentrating on finding one thing on sale. Also, I took a poll and everyone seems excited about it.
So, if you can't find an idea of homemade gifts that work very well for you, I recommend picking a theme.

I'm having the same dilemma (wide age range and lots of people to think about).
I am probably going to bake a wide variety of cookies, bars, candies, cakes, etc. I'm also considering biscotti. Put them in cute tins or festive boxes lined in tissue paper and voila.
Most people enjoy homemade goodies - I've never had bad luck giving baked goods away.
* I like the homemade bath salts idea that the other answerer gave - that would be nice for the women *

Food is always good. Cookies, candy, popcorn balls, snack mixes, etc. What I'm doing for my mom this year I think she'll really like. Roughly 8 years ago my aunt gave me a book on making tissue paper flowers, and the other day when I was cleaning off bookshelves I found it. I plan on making her a bunch of her favorite flower and putting them in a simple jar from the craft store with some stones/flat back marbles to keep them in place. Something like that is really nice if you know their favorite flower, and still sweet if you don't. I also always get good ideas when wandering the craft store, so try that.

how about homemade jewelry for the ladies and maybe even some men. u can buy everything u need online or at craft stores. or u could do those cookie mixes in jars where u put in all the dry ingredients in the jar tie on some pretty ribbon and print the instructions on nice paper and also tie that on with the ribbon. i can't really think of many ideas for the guys though sorry. I hope this helps though. good luck and have fun

If you are artistic and have a good printer on your computer, make personalized stationery or note pads for everyone, shopping lists, etc. If you love to cook, make cookies, cakes, pies, or even meals for them 'as needed' and give them 'gift certificates' with a 'five day ahead' or 'one week ahead' notice for redemption. Another good thing you can 'give' is your 'time and energy' to do chores, go shopping, babysit children or pets, garden, etc. In other words, think of what you can 'do' that these people will appreciate, then make a gift certificate 'book' with up to five for closer relatives, and perhaps just one certificate for others, according to what you 'can give' and what you think they'd enjoy most.
When my children were at home, we used to always 'celebrate' Mother's Day the same way. I didn't want 'gifts' but I did want to get my 'garden' cleaned up and looking good for summer. On Mother's Day, we'd all go outside and I had four (sometimes more, since their friends wanted to help, too) willing helpers to whom I could give any 'garden assignment' I wanted. For supper, we got out the barbecue and had our first 'eating outside' meal, then we'd clean up, go inside to bathe and watch TV or read until bed. Think of that when you are doing your 'gifting' and you'll be a 'hit' with everyone you give 'the gift of self' to!

Oh boy the ideas running through my head!!
I enjoy rubber stamping and scrapbooking so my thoughts run in that direction first....
A scrapbook made by you with family photos or photos of your family this year
A set of greeting cards you made in a matching box made of card stock
For anyone who has a lot of photos an album that you've already done the pages in and all they have to do is add the photos and the journaling.
There are all kinds of different things you can make.
Go to the web site below and you'll find all kinds of ideas. Go to the gallery and scroll down to anything but a card section and you'll find the tutorials and gallery links for all kinds of projects. You can also go to the resources page and you will find some projects with tutorials there. In fact there is a tutorial somewhere on Split Coast Stampers for a book you make with pockets for cards for people's birthdays that can be used for years to come.
I enjoy photograhy. With digital cameras these days it is so easy to take pictures and inexpensive to get them printed. Photographs are a great gift for people and usually appreciated. You can present the pictures in a scrapbook, purchase photo frames (Michael's has had theirs on sale for about a month now), in a digital frame, or you can put them on a disc and have it run as a slide show or if your computer can make a DVD you can create a DVD with your photos. You can even have the photos play through with music.
If you like to sew you can make a small lap quilt or a wall hanging.
If you knit or crochet you can make a small afghan, you'd have to be quick though.
It depends on how close your family members are for this idea but if they are close you could make a coupon book with services or dates such as going to a restaurant for dinner together or going to a movie together or a day or afternoon at a museum or something. There are tons of ideas you could do with that one.
You could take someone's favorite quote and use your computer to make it look really cool or really classy then frame it.
If you have had a vegetable garden or have done any kind of berry picking you could give canned goods you've canned yourself as gifts. Jams, jellies that kind of stuff.
How about doing a recipe book sharing favorite recipes. You could just share yours or you could tell your family members you're in a food rut and need some of their favorite recipes to try. That way you're collecting their favorite recipes on the sly. Then print them up nicely in your computer or do them scrapbook style and give anyone a copy who might be interested.
If you have any kind of artistic talent use that to create gifts for your family members. A drawing, a painting, a sculpture, whatever area you are gifted in.
Make a home made jouranal with special memories you have with that person who will receive it. Include what they mean to you, why they are special to you, what you appreciate about them. You get the idea.
Businesses like Michael's crafts and other craft stores are usually offereing classes that are project specific. If it looks like something you could give as a gift then take the class and when you're done you'll have one gift done or one more done.
I hope this was helpful and that you have fun with your projects!

1/4 cup honey
2 cups Chopped walnuts
1 x powdered sugar

Food, food and more food. Brownies, cookies, cupcakes, popcorn balls, homemade spagetti sauce, quiche...the list is endless. Also, make your own fruit baskets and for a variety with the fruit stick in some nuts.
Everyone likes food and it will never go to waste.

How about cross-stitched bookmarks using aida band? That's what I did for my friends last Christmas...
