As an educated basketball fan (as you state that you are) we all know that statistics are not everything. If your argument holds weight here are you really going to argue that Robert Horry is greater than Dwayne Wade because he has him beat 7 championships to 1??

Kobe is recognized (not just by one ESPN guy) as the best basketball player because he is very, very complete in his game. He is consistently a top 3 scorer in the league, and is consistently a first or second team defender. And a stat that he does have- is that he averages the most point in the 4th quarter (he's the best closer in the game)- and he's the one that most coaches want with the ball in his hands in the 4th quarter.

I know that he has failed to do that in the late rounds of the playoffs- he's hit some big shots against: Phoenix, Portland, and the Sacaremento Kings over the years- but just can't do it in the finals for some reason- although in this past Olympic games though he wasn't the leader in any stat- in that final game against Spain (when the US was fading and Spain cut the US lead down to 2) Kobe took over and was involved in the next 17 points (during the last 6 minutes of the game) that gave the US the win. And Kobe does this consistently and takes over games during key stretches. So that is what makes him in many opinions the greatest in the game at this time.
