    Para can mean either 'for' or 'in order to'

    'Para tener exito, hay que estudiar. (In order to be successful, you have to study)

    Lo compre para mi hermano. (I bought it for my brother)

    Por can mean many thing depending on the situation. It can mean 'for', 'through', 'by', 'because of',.... etc
