What about this mermaid thing? ?

I posted this in the Psychology section and am not getting a good reponse, so I am reposting my question here so maybe more people will see it and respond. Please, no children answer, adults only! Here is the original post:

Why do so many young girls have a mermaid fixation? I'm talking about this "Oh, help, I'm becoming a mermaid" and "anybody know any good spells to make me become a mermaid" thing. I don't remember this being around when I was a young girl, so I am figuring there must be some kind of cultural trigger. In my day most young girls wanted to become witches. I see some of that today, but I've never encountered this mermaid thing. Is it a bid for attention? Is it derived from some new role playing game I'm unaware of? Do they feel they are being creative and different by posting these types of questions? Are they playing a game and want others to play along?

I am always interested in what makes people tick. Would someone who knows something about psychology care to comment?

I have a young girl and she has never had any mermaid fixation. She pretends shes all sorts of things, even something as random as a hand bag ( as she hangs of dads arm). THERE CHILDREN, THEY HAVE IMAGINATION, THEY PLAY.

Let them enjoy the pleasures of fantasy, weren't you ever a child?
