What is "window sketching" on a car?

I know it's an anti-theft device, but what does it do? How does it work? The only info I can find online is that you can get discounted insurance if you have it.

It's "Window Etching" almost every car dealership offers it. It's where they etch in VIN into all glass, insurance companies give a discount for having it done. It makes it very expensive for someone to alter the vin for that vehicle.

Quite simply it is an engraving of serial numbers that are etched

into the glass which identify the vehicle that it belongs to. This is

    supposed to help prevent theft....

Personally, I think it is a joke and a great pitch for the salesman

    and the automotive manufacturer..

Who is ever going to find these numbers and their corresponding

    vehicle....??

But, it's a couple of hundred extra dollars in their pockets at the

    dealership....

That's just my opinion on window etching....
