Is your favorite band/artist on Rolling Stone's The Immortals list...?

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/5939214/the...

Rolling Stone, as it exists today, is an oft-criticized magazine. However, I thought this list was very interesting and well-done.

Music fans could argue over the order ("Cream isn't in the top 50? NO, NO, NO!" lol) until the end of the world, but most of the greats are on the list (IMO).

Also, the idea of getting notable musicians and music industry figures to write the articles (Elvis Costello on The Beatles, Marilyn Manson on The Doors) was a very creative and winning one.

---

So... is your favorite band/artist on the list? If so, where and who wrote the article?

Update:

Radiohead is on the list (#73). Dave Matthews wrote the article. I thought he did a nice job.

"It belittles Radiohead to describe their music as having 'hooks.' Their music talks to you, in a real way. It can take you down a quiet street before it drops a beautiful musical bomb on you. It can build to where you think the whole thing will crumble beneath its own weight -- and then Thom Yorke will sing some melody that just cuts your heart out of your chest. [...] They followed their most critically acclaimed record, OK Computer, with their most radical change, Kid A. It's not that they're indifferent: It's that the strength of character in their music is beyond their control."

Update 2:

One major flaw with this list: Pink Floyd not being included. What a punch to their lifelong devoted fans (of which there are millions around the world). I'm not even a *huge* PF fan and the snub made me mad. lol

    Let's see now...

Led Zeppelin ~ #14 ~ by Dave Grohl

No, sorry, I am *NOT AT ALL* impressed by that list.

Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull, and Dire Straits aren't on there, and FM should sure as heck be at *least* in the top 100 {and higher than GN'R}, and should *really* be in the top 50.

Yes. Elvis Costello wrote a great article about the Beatles. I too was sad to see Pink Floyd not included. Peter Wolf wrote a really nice article about Van Morrison (#42) and then of course Marilyn Manson's article about the Doors (#41) but what was most touching was Lenny Kravitz writing about John Lennon (#38) what a great article.

I may not agree with everything on the list, but it is pretty good.

Yes. But I don't expect that Britney Spears really wrote a good essay about her.

Rolling Stone publishes these lists all the time. And it's always the same. The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Hendrix, Zeppelin, blah, blah, blah.

In the last few years they've done the 100 Greatest Albums, 100 Greatest Guitarists, 100 Greatest Songs, it's always all the same bands. That being said, I will buy this issue like I buy all their issues. Mostly for that "Get Your War On" comic. Oh wait, this is an old list.

Sorry Rush fans, once again RS has slighted you. But I guess you're used to that.

    Jill & Persephone: Madonna rocks.

Yes, Led Zeppelin's on there at 14, which I find to be a little low but whatever. I loved Dave Grohl's article on them. Two out of my five favorite bands are missing (the lack of Pink Floyd is *extremely* messed up, and Queen should have made the list somewhere).

I was very glad to see The Yardbirds on there, and I'm ecstatic Steven Tyler wrote the article. You can tell just by listening to Aerosmith how much of an influence the band had on them lyrically (they often make little references to songs) and musically. I'm particularly fond of (and completely in agreement with) what he said about Keith Relf. "Keith Relf wasn't great, but how he sang it made him a master." That's exactly what I've been saying. :)

The Rolling Stones are there at #4, written by Steven van Zandt, a member of another of my favorite groups. Keith Richards wrote the article on Gram Parsons, one of my favorite country-rock artists.

Yep, Guns N Roses- Joe Perry

and the Sex Pistols -- Billie Joe Armstrong

I was pissed a bit that they were so low on the list. I mean Seriously. ANd GnR should have been higher than half the bands on there.

    Other than that...yay.

And I agree, Pink Floyd should have been on their. Oh yea, definently. They were so much better than Cream(how the hell did they get on there and PF didin't?)

they did seem to do well, even amongst some of my favorites that are often poorly represented on these types of things. and by the way cream is 66. as long as they are on there somewhere i am cool with it, they are hard to rank because of their short existence.

    7. james brown by rick rubin

    11. bob marly by wyclef jean

    50. the band by lucinda williams

    51. howling wolf by buddy guy

    69. carl perkins by tom petty

    71. frank zappa by trey anastasio

    93. booker t and the mgs by isaac hayes

    100. lee "scratch" perry by adam horovitz

i should say that i like about 95% of the artists on this list. kick out eminem and replace him with pink floyd and i would feel reasonably good about it. oh and slip in tom waits somewhere... really i am having a hard time finding weak links to take out in favor of other bands...eminem is the only one really. maybe madonna, but she is important enough that you can excuse it. its obviously not just a rock list so you cant be a genre elitist. easily one of the better lists i have seen from rolling stone.

I think The Velvet Underground were in the top 20 and it was written by Julian Casablancas from The Strokes.

The Who were in the top 50.

It's odd that Pink Floyd weren't on the list. But, I tend to stay away from Rolling Stone. They sort of caved into popular taste and they have contradicted themselves more than once. Nirvana's "Nevermind" got three stars basck in '91, but now they give it five and it's in their top twenty.

    Great article.

    The Doors by Marilyn Manson

I could not believe I was reading Marilyn Manson, that was very well written.

Bummer on no Pink Floyd, how could they be missed? Not cool.

I can't believe Pink Floyd is not on there. Especially with the love Rolling Stone tends to give them. Oh well, I 'll say Led Zeppelin since they are my second favorite.
