Well basically because its a rule, 3 touches or hits on each side before the ball needs to get over the net. It keeps the ball moving.

If you got more than three hits on each side the ball could be set up to be spiked and the spiker may not like the set so they might just bump the ball back to their setter so they could get a better set for the next spike attempt.

So basically it gives volleyball players motivation to become better players because they aren't going to be allowed to re-do their previous mistake until the ball comes back over the net. And when the other team hits the ball back over they may spike it on you and get the point.

Im putting way too much thought into this but basically 3 touches is important in volleyball because its a rule.

Using 3 touches is the most effective way of ending a rally. In general, your team needs to be at a certain skill level for this to be applicable. If you are all 10 years old, then you can't "Spike" the ball for a kill just yet. However, if you are 14+, then you start to understand why 3 touches are very important. If you can get a good pass to the setter, the setter can give the hitters a good set which they can spike down much harder than anyone could if you just return the ball after 1 touch.

Hope that was easy to understand.

It's all about control. Usually if a ball comes over the net, the other team intended it to be hard for you to get. For example a spike or serve may be too hard for you get back over the net in one hit.

1.) First, by passing it to the setter, you take some of that energy away from it. The passers get the ball under control to make it easier for the setter to set it.

2.) The setter now has a better chance of setting the ball and getting it to to hitter (Ask any team - the setter ALWAYS has second ball.)

3.) The third touch is the hitter. Because the passers got the ball under control and the setter was able to get it to you, now you have a better chance at making a kill.

    I hope that helps!

You want to attack well. I guess you could just pass to your hitters and have them hit the passes all the time... But, using all three hits means that you can incorporate more strategy into your game.

On hit two, the setter can do many things to increase the likelihood of scoring. Without that set, the game would lose most of it's strategy.

Because you pass it (bump) to the setter who sets it to the spiker who spikes it. 1,2,3
