A lift and carried ball are essentially the same thing. It happens when a player is setting and the ball stays in their hands for too long. A lift can also be called when a player is using a "tip" or "dink" shot. If they hold the ball for too long, it can be called a lift at the Referee's discretion.
Basically, anytime the ball is held for longer than the allotted time, it is a lift.

when the ball touches the palms of their hand when setting or tipping the ball over the net.
