Yogurt is made by bacteria, so without bacteria, there would not be yogurt.

The bacteria used to make yogurt from milk are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species. The bacteria are added to milk, and they "eat" the milk sugars, and produce lactic acid as their waste product. Because of that lactic acid, the milk proteins start to tangle into a solid mass (curd). The acid will also kill pathogenic (sick making) bacteria.

Sometimes, some additional Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium bacteria are added, and these strains are believed to make the yogurt healthier (probiotics).

But all yogurts have bacteria in them, and they are good for you!

Bacteria is what makes yogurt yogurt. It's GOOD bacteria (lactobacillus), as opposed to bacteria that can cause disease and illness.
