Grotesque in literature means something that induces both empathy and disgust. In the Fall of the House of Usher, the reader feels empathy towards Roderick Usher, as both he and his sister fall mentally ill. His sister eventually dies and it is obvious that Usher was very close to her.

However, the reader is also disgusted to learn that his sister was entombed alive and comes out of her coffin only to really die moments later.
