What is your opinion on the Safe-haven law?
I'm curious about your opinions on the safe-haven law in effect in most states. What do you think about the law in general? Do you think limiting the age of the child/infant to 3 days old is good enough? If not, up to what age do you think would be appropriate?
Personally, I wish they would make the childs age up to about 2 years old. Not every parent decides to abandon a child within the first 72 hours of life and there are always extenuating circumstances past that stage.

Here in Missouri, A child can be five days old or younger, however, if you don't mind being charged with an offense, they (fire departments, hospitals, police departments, etc.) will accept the child if they are older than five days and less than 30 days. I think that it is a great way to keep a child from coming to harm. I believe the age group is set that young because most children found abandoned in trash cans or boxes, etc. are newborns and therefore they want to protect them in those critical first days. I do believe that you are right, however; older children are sometimes abandoned as well, however, the local Division of Child Protection is where one should tyake their child to, if they find that they no longer want to parent. Children are then plac ed in emergency foster care until a more permanent resource is made available. During this time, the mother has the ability to see if giving up her children is really what she wanted to do, and at the same time she is offered services ( be it mental services like therapy, section eight housing vouchers if she is homeless, job training) that if she had them, she might not have felt the desperation that drove her to think that her children would be better off without her. I would like to think that the remaining percentage of people is a rather small percentage; those that simply don't want the children they had. Whatever the case, lets hope that befopre we find another child left outdoors to starve or die, that people are using these safe havens . Blessings....

First I think that there are other options to consider before you abandon your child. With that said I think the law mostly does a good job of making a woman feel safe in deciding she can't be a mother. You are right that it should be longer then 3 days. I know that some people disagree with the law but I think it is better then babies dying because the mother couldn't or wouldn't care for them.
There were plenty of times that I thought I could just put this kid down and walk away, I would never really do it but I think every mother hits her limit at some point (sick baby, baby won't sleep, up all night)

I think it should be even older than that. I don't want to give people an excuse to just get rid of their kids, but at the same time, I would rather than happen than some poor innocent child being hurt or even dying.
