What happens to contacts that you have to through them away every month?
I've been wearing contacts for 10 years now. I am very much aware that if you don't take care of them you can damage your eyes for good. So please no comments about how I'll ruin my eyes forever... rest assured, I take good care of my contacts.
But my question is, what physically happens to the contact lens that makes it only good for one month (or week, etc. depending on the brand and type)? Does it begin to break down, get weak, etc?

The actual matrix of the lens gets plugged up with protein from your tears, no matter how well they are cleaned.
Once the lens is plugged up, it can barely transmit oxygen anymore to the cornea...and don't hold the moisture well anymore either.
Different materials last longer that others, thats why some are daily, 2 week, monthly.

I don't know why it happened, but a lot of my contacts disappeared. Why did this happen? How can I get it back? Hopefully its temporary. They are contacts from many years. They are important. I think I had about 1000 and now I have about 30.

Protein starts to build up on the lens which makes them uncomfortable. I have the disposable kind but I can make one pair last about 3 months or longer if I take good care of them (i.e. clean them well). It saves money, too.
Where did "they'll ruin your eyes" come from? They have only IMPROVED my vision. Just keep them clean.
