Yes, it is true but unfortunately, I am on vacation in England so i can't show you the place. However, I will FedEx you the keys if you send a deposit (which is refundable) to me. The address is blah blah blah and you can see outside and the area. The Address in England is blah blah blah for you to mail a check.

In reality.... another person has the place for rent $1500 and up and a scam artist stole the info and reposted it at a lower price to get you. Most likely, it was taken from a realtor site so you don't see the ad listed twice.

When you send money to get the keys via FedEx, you would have lost the money. When you later show up at the place weeks later to complain, you meet the TRUE owner who can't help you.

Beware and don't transfer any money to anyone until you can walk in the place and read the paperwork.

Yes, you can usually find cheaper apartments on CL but you're also more likely to wind up with an apartment with poor upkeep and unreliable landlords. Sometimes it works out great but as with anything else, you usually get what you pay for. It can't hurt to give it a try but keep an eye out for potential problems.

You can find apartments for low prices, yes. In addition the scams described by other answerers, note that many of these cheap apartments are located in neighborhoods like Hollis or Brownsville that are many miles from Manhattan, not accessible by subway, and may have crime problems.
