Sims 2 not working on my computer (that has vista) Help please!?

I just recently bought a laptop that has vista as the operating system. I installed all of the games and the game kept crashing either at the loading screen or while making a family. So I uninstalled them all and reinstalled just Sims 2 to test it and it is still crashing. It always crashes before I even get to a point where I could actually play. Is this a vista problem? And if so, is there a solution?

Update:

It's definitely not the ram, as I have 4 gb of ram. It is a brand new laptop (gateway) and vista came standard with it.

As far as the patches go, do you install all of the games first, then the patches? And where do I get the patches?

If your game is crashing at the create-a-family screen chances are it's because your graphics card does not meet the games requirements.

To play the Sims 2 on Vista you need one of the following cards, according to the official EA Games FAQ http://thesims2.ea.com/help/detail.php?help_id=281...

    ATI Radeon 9800 and above. (9800, X550, X600, X700, X800, X850, X1600, X1800, X1900, X1950)

    NVidia 6000 series and above. (6600, 7300, 7600, 7800, 7900, 7950, 8800)

These are okay cards that may not support all The Sims 2 graphical features:

    ATI Radeon 9600, 9700, X300, X1300

    NVidia 6200, 7100

Now, many laptops do not have dedicated graphics cards but onboard or integrated graphics. If this is your problem you will probably have major issues trying to play an expansions above Nightlife. You may be able to play the early expnsions to a certain extent using low settings but later expansions have very high graphics requirements and integrated graphics just can't cope. For more help for playing with onboard or integrated graphics see here: http://www.sims2wiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help...

Getting your game patched is always a good idea but if you have an unsupported card, or integrated graphics, you simply will not be able to play the later expansions whether your game is patched or not.

It is worth noting that EA Games came out with 'laptop friendly' games like Castaway Stories, Pet Stories etc because so many people were unable to play the normal Sims 2 games on laptops due to low-end or integrated graphics.

It's difficult to answer a computer questions without actually sitting there playing with the machine (my personal preference and one that I used when I was a computer tech), but have you tried installing all of the updates for The Sims? Also, do you get an error when the game crashes? It could be something with your video card (doubtful, unless it needs a drivers update, which is possible on a new machine as they can sit in boxes for months). It could also be that there are conflicts with other programs. It's really a myriad of possibilities. My best advice is to make sure that all the patches for The Sims are installed as you go through the installation process. The game will check and tell you if you need to install updates, don't skip those steps.

Yeah it depends on the type of computer you have.

Because my old computer that had vista on it, didn't let me play Sims 2. But now I have a Acer with Vista on it.

    And it works fine.

But I'm soo ready for them to get games that actually work good on vista.

Well vista is TERRIBLE for games. What you want to do before you stress out about vista buy xp and install it youll save time, stress. if you look on ebay, xp only costs around like 100 dollars.

  • you computer is not suitable for the Sims games. I have the same. I have a laptop, and it's vista. You have to get a computer that is good for gamming and stuff. Yours is probably not that type of computer.

Mine did that too. You need a new graphics card, as with vista lots of the graphics are used.

I used to work at the 24 hour help desk for Maxis, Sims 2's Company.

Your problem has to do with your ram, Sims 2 requires 2 gigs of ram..

    Add more ram.

If it isn't the ram, then call me at 718-828-1759, I'll troubleshoot it with you personally.. *Wink wink*

Well if it is not a Microsoft software it won't work. Try installing Lenox as an operating system.
