What is the ring on the side of this fireplace for?
The fireplace in the apartment I am hoping to move to has a ring embedded in the side, inside the firebox. What is that ring for? It appears to be QUITE strong.
It's not a knob, and it's certainly not a shut off. It's IN the fireplace, on the side of the place where the burning wood goes.

Maybe years ago it was a gas fireplace and that was a turn off valve. See if it turns.

It is hard to guess without seeing it but if this is really old construction I imagine it was put there to hang something close to the fire, but not in the fire... like an old fashioned iron, a pot, or wet socks.
