Your friend most likely has been given the wrong advice as to what valve he should put in the crf250r as I know some put steel valves in them and then that can cause a problem. So tell him to find another valve and not the one he is using.
My sons have been racing hondas for the last few years and that is basically because my youngest is sponsored by them. The crf250r has been a great race bike and we have had no problems with them.
I will agree with you that the Yamaha is the better 2 stroke 125cc and they haul **** off the line. The fact that Honda have not made a new model cr125cc means that they have not bothered to upgrade the model since around 2005. so the bikes that are being raced are really outdated. It means for us that my son really has to ride technically correct as you can be pretty sure that the Yammies will be off the line better or overun him down the straight and then he has to corner better to make it up. It makes him a better rider and since he is off the 125cc next year it really doesn't matter.

It all has to do with the year, and model. I have owned 2 Yamaha's I loved, 1 I liked, and 1 I hated. I owned 1 honda that I liked almost as well as my best yamaha, and 1 that is the best bike that I have ever riden (2001 cr 500, the last open 2 stroke produced). I have never talked to anyone that liked the first 450 honda 4 stroke they made, but sense then I've heard alot good about them. NO manufacturer makes the perfect bike, however they can all be made perfect with the proper aftermarket modifications.

what i think people love hondas is because they are very clean, reliable, and easy to use bikes.
I dont know what is going on with your friend's honda.. but if you warm it up and don't rev it out all the time NO bike should almost never blow up.
Hondas have the most average reliable engine, sure there are hondas that blow up from racing the crap out of it, but most dont have any problems with the engine.
Hondas put so much more testing than other manufacturers that their bikes are never put on the market with a risk (Suzuki rushed into EFI in 08 and Honda waited to perfect theirs in 09)
Honda offers things like steering dampeners, aftermarket bars, unique styles, in 09 they have a engine personalize devise for EFI. ect.
Hondas are just the best overall bike.. other bikes may have more power, but lack turning, or may have good suspension but slow engine.

well i gtot a crf250r and its the 08 model and the valves are fine, he must have one of the 05 or below modles, they fixed the valve problems in 06
i Personally like Ktms more but Hondas are awesome, i just couldnt say no to the dual pipes on the 250 so i had to get it
oh yeah and also they are the best overall bikes, good turning, steering dampeners, renthal bars, reliable engine and the resell high
i just love them because ive always ridden them and ive found them a very reliable bike, only problem with the 250 is its a real b*tch to start
and also proven fact red things go faster :D

Sounds like your friend doesn't know how to care for his CRF to me. Honda's, Yamaha's, Suzuki's, whatever. They are all great bikes and saying one is way better than the others just makes a person sound like a total novice.

hondas are high quality good bikes, the crf 250s especialy the early ones have engine unreliabilities like you said I wouldnt go for that unless its ok for you to rebuild it, thats the only drawback though, yamaha 2 strokes are better though but the honda 4 strokes have got it

Guy on a Honda pulls up to a toll booth. Toll collector says "Two dollars".
Honda rider says "Sold!"
Just a joke. My friends ride Hondas, Kawis, and I myself a Yama.
