When will Turkey become a member of the European Union? ?

I don't understand why Bulgaria, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland ect have became members but Turkey has not, when it has one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

:S I have always thought of Turkey as being a well developed and established country, unlike some places in Eastern Europe that have already became members.

What holds behind Turkey of joining the EU is

-The Cyprus issue (the troops that remain on the island)

-Some human rights issues (freedom of speech,f.e)

-political problems (goverment goes to courts)

    -Armenian genocide denial

A strong economy is a passage for EU but needs to fullfil some other criteria as well

I agree with lot many observations that Emira K raised. Turkey has to open up its mind and soul and not be tied down by the religious bigots. On one hand it is striving for "developed" tag and "EU membership" and on the other hand its own government is trying to bring medival period laws of putting headscarves by the female students in educational institutions. Surely Turkey is lot liberal than many other Islamic countries, but it is not liberal enough. The levels of poverty and beggings on the streets of Istanbul reminds one that there is still much to be done before Turkey can become a member of the European Union.

Actually out of the listed countries, Turkey is only slightly better off economically than Bulgaria and Romania. Some of those countries have more than double its gdp per inhabitant.

Another reason beside those already listed are cultural differences (muslim country). It also has a large population so there are immigration concerns because EU member citizens can move around and work freely in any other EU country.

I asked that same question before i went on holiday there (last week)

My mum said no country actually wants them in.

Also EU countries have to have stability and have certain numbers with money and rates etc

Turkey may be going up in the world but there still considered quite poor

there is also a war going on at the moment there too.

    loads of reasons.

i'd rather they not be in there my fave country to go on holiday but i think they do better without being in the EU

and i like getting 200 fags for £10 ha ha!

When Turkey stops imprisoning writers who believe in free speech and who oppose the common belief in Turkey which is drummed into citizens that no-one has the right to criticise the state. What kind of news do you read? If it was a decent source you'd know that Turkey has major problems at the moment between its ruling Islamic and secular factions within the government. I'm too busy to keep up-to-date with all the details but it's no way near being as 'democratic' or stable as any other E.U. state and it's nothing to do with its economy. There is major political and religious upheavel in Turkey which complicates its joining the E.U. for obvious reasons, methinks.
