Motorcycle controlled stops?

After coming to a dead halt on a motorcycle, if i'm still in a higher gear (say third), how do i downshift to first with the bike stationary?

Continue to hold the clutch in and tap your gear shift a few times to make sure you are in first. If you don't, you're going to stall out when you attempt to go again.

Depends on the condition of the gearbox (age of the motorcycle), but the first thing to try is just tap on the shifter twice.

If that doesn't work (not as well broken in gear box, or maybe too well broken in), let out the clutch just a tiny bit (while still on the brakes) to put some "pressure" on the drivetrain, redepress the clutch all the way in, and try to downshift again. You will be able to feel when the shifter actually engages the next lower gear all the way.

If the bike is really run down, you may end up rocking the bike back and forth (forward and backward) with the clutch all the way in, in order to allow you to downshift. In the hundreds of bikes that I've ridden, there are only a handful in this bad of a shape of syncho.

Really you should be anticipating the stop and have changed to first gear as you come to a halt.

the other answers seem to sufficiently answer your question but if ya don't wanna worry about doing that just hold the clutch in and shift down on your way into the stop.

just click down...you may have to let out the clutch a little to engage second fully, pull it back in and shift down to first...
