When Gitmo is closed by the next president?

What is going to happen to the 200+ guys there? They haven't been charged, tried or convicted of anything- are we just going to open the cell door and say 'you can go anywhere you want so long as it isn't America'?

P.S. Both Obama and McCain have declared they will close the prison, so this isn't about politics.

It's a real problem, because some of their own countries won't take them back.

There's actually talk of the US making a deal with Europe so that some will get absorbed into the US and some into Europe.

    Wellll

America has three BIG problems here. To start with anybody who was in that prison who didn't hate America and who wasn't a terrorist will now certainly hate America. Even if these people weren't connected to terrorism they now have the inside track on the War on Terror and so are valuable resources for actual terrorists. They were questioned repeatedly by US authorities and all they have to do is to tell the terrorists what they were questioned about to reveal what the US does and doesn't know. For example if you torture a guy to get him to tell you where a man named ..... is he now knows that you suspect .... and that you don't know where he is. :Lastly, these guys know exactly what went on inside that prison. They know about all of the torture and the inhumane things that happened because they happened to them. This information could do a lot to hurt the US's reputation.

I think that some of these people will be returned home, and that other's will become stateless and will basically claim asylum in the first country that they think will take them (based on current trends, this is likely to be Britain as they will let pretty much anybody in, or another Islamic state).

If McCain wins he will transfer as many people as he can to the US to try them under US law, if Obama wins much fewer people will be transfered to the US and will instead find shelter in third party countries.

Of course, some prisioners may also be ghosted to other secret prisons around the world. I can just see McCain moving the Afghan prisioners to prisons in Afghanistan, etc.

They haven't been charged with any crimes so they should go. American taxpayers will no longer be burdened with their support.
