I work for a major university in Texas that raves about how they recycle and are environmentally concious, while behind the scenes, they THROW AWAY, NOT RECYCLE, paper, plastic, etc. They also toss out PCs, pronters, etc and thousands of dollars of books and teaching supplies. I tried to complain to papers, Regents, student unions, etc and everyone is afraid to respond because of the size of this university. what else can I do?

I live in Wausau Wisconsin, we have a web site called Wausaufreecycle, that's where people get rid of what they no longer want by posting it on freecycle, and if there is something that someone needs and is looking for they will post what they need hopping someone has what they want and is getting rid of it, sort of like an exchange, check your state and see if they offer something like that. Or go to yahoo groups and type in your city with the name frecycle, like I have mine, but you have to have a yahoo account.

I agree with Babyfeet.
Offer some solutions so you have an answer where they can't have an excuse. Also check with organizations like Rotary or Lions, some take books to other countries such as Eritrea.
See if there are local scouts that are doing a recycling project that can do some of the work for you.
As for the sensitive papers, there may be a community shred going on.
As for the electronics there are several organizations that may direct you to the right people or place. Try the NCER (the National Center for Electronics Recycling) or try the EPA at http://www.epa.gov/osw/conserve/materials/ecycling... Click on "where do I donate computers and electronics" There is a slew of resources on that page, too much to list. Maybe if there's enough to donate, they can set up a pick up. I know Goodwill is one of the few places I checked around that will take monitors and other equipment without charging a recycling fee.
Hope this is of some assistance to you and best of luck.

Complaining usually does not help. One of the best ways of helping is by showing. Put a recycle bin in your office or wherever and take the bin home and put out with your personal recycling or bring it to a recycling facility. Can you talk to a supervisor and make a plan to make a small change? Maybe find a home for some printers or books? It can be difficult to donate certain items like out of date books, old paper or computers because of the info they may contain and potential for trouble down the line. Good luck!
