Can my manager stop me going to mental health appointments?

I am due to start psychotherapy sessions soon for many problems that have been plaguing me for years. I am to see someone for an hour a week for about a year. I already have the very latest appointment they can offer yet I would still have to finish work half an hour earlier than my contracted time.

Can my boss stop me from going? I was referred to the service by my own doctor and local mental health service and have been waiting a LONG time to finally get to see someone.

Any help would be great. Thanks :)

More details..... yes, my boss is an *** and does not believe in mental health issues.

I live in the UK and work for the NHS - the National Health Service.

I know I have to attend for a year as I have already had several assesment appointments.

    If they could prove that you going early was detrimental to the running of their business then they can terminate your employment. However, most companies would try not to go down that route, if you took them to court for unfair dismissal and they lost it could cost them a lot of money. Have you told your manager what it is all about. Most employers are sympathetic when it comes to long term illness to good employees

    I would have a word with a disability rights organisation to find out exactly what the law is. Your boss just not believing in mental health issues is not good enough. Legally they are not allowed to discriminate over disability - and anyone who has suffered from any sort of mental illness will know how debilitating it is!

    I don't think an employer is allowed to stop you seeking medical support - and if he can't change your hours to allow this, even though you have shown that you have done everything possible to limit disruption to your employer - these clinics only work Monday-Friday 9-5, so you don't have an alternative, he will look very silly if he sacks you and you take him to court for unfair dismissal. It might also be worth having a word with ACAS regarding working conditions.

    I was in your situation 2 years ago.

    I told my manager and there was no problem.

    I was paid by the hours I worked and did have to lose the money.

    If you have any difficulties you must see a union representative. This ridiculous person should know better-He works for the NHS!

    Basically, he can fire you. So, if you do not want to be fired, then I guess he is stopping you from going to your appointment. However, what I find hard to believe is your statement of seeing this person for about a year. NO doctor can inform you how long the treatment will be until s/he speaks with you, etc.

    He can't tell you that you can't go to the mental health appointments but unfortunately he can force you to work a different shift, or even fire you because you're time slot is in a contract that you had previously signed and therefore he can enforce.

    Law will protect you. Your referring doctor can send a letter to your boss referring to the requirement for you to attend appointments and can keep the procedure confidential.

    Contact your labor board and ask them what your rights are. Sounds like your boss should also go to a shrink.

    Always remember that everyone has a boss. If they are being unreasonable, go to their boss.

    This is something you and your employer should be able to work out.

    But if not, your employer has the expectation that you will be at work when you are scheduled to work. If you can't do that, disciplinary actions could result.

    At least in the UK, there is NOTHING they can do. You have a legal right to access official healthcare - especially if prescribed by your GP. Sounds like you have a jumped-up, power mad manager.
