Owners of high shedding dogs... How do you keep your house clean? ?

I vacuum often with our trusty dyson. I try to dust regularly, and brush the beast with furminator. We feed him Canidae which I think is a decent food. Really, it just boils down to us owning a Lab who sheds like a normal Lab would shed! Whats your routine on keeping your house clean? Do you vacuum daily? Use any of those "hair release" carpet dusting formulas? Scented candles/febreeze? Have a brushing schedule? I think we do an OK job of keeping the house from looking like 3 animals live there ( 2 cats, 1 dog) but am interested to see if you have any other tips on what you do in your home, because I am sure I could do more! =)

thanks!

I vacuum at least every other day. I too, have a Dyson.

I gate the dogs to keep them out of rooms I don't want them in - our formal living room, our dining room the spare bedrooms upstairs.

I only have to worry about my kitchen, my family room, my mud room and my bedroom... The rest of the house gets vacuumed weekly or less.

I put a king sized white sheet over the top of my bed. When a dog gets on the bed, it keeps the hair from the quilts and the sheets. I change the white sheet a couple times a week. My dogs are not allowed on the furniture. They have their own dog beds that I drag from room to room for them. Those covers get washed weekly.

My dogs are kept clean with trips to the groomers, wiping their paws when they come in and drying them if its raining outside. They are also fed great food, receive top notch vet care and are brushed regularly.

I change my furnace filters every 2-3 weeks and I vacuum my vents weekly.

My house does not smell like a kennel and if you didn't see (or hear) my dogs, you'd never know that 4 labs and a cocker mix live there.

I'd never shave my dogs. They are not hot, don't shed excessively and I think shaved labs are ugly.

I have 5 dogs. 2 are Welsh Corgi's and if you know the breed they shed like they are losing all their fur in one day. The 2 of them out shed the other 3. If I have time and energy (I am pregnant with 2nd daughter) I take them all outside and give them a great brushing then let them play for a while in the yard to loose the lose stuff. At this time they mainly stay in there doggie pad (A re-done attached garage stall with a half door, for just the dogs to hang out in during the day) When the hair builds up I vacuum and normally spray some static guard on all the fabrics then vacuum. Or use a powder to try to loosen the sticky hairs. I do a good vacuuming every other day to the rest of the house, and the dogs get regular baths. I found giving them too many baths just made them loose more hair. I really just gave up and I live with it. It doesnt bother me as much anymore and all my friends know about the hair situation. Its not terrible or bad but if you come to my house you just expect to get a little hair on you. I have cats too and thats usually what people go home with the most.

P.S. my dogs are on a Natural diet and they dont smell particularly doggie. I dont use much in the way of air fresheners other than some candles and carpet powders. I tend to open all the windows and turn on the fans for a 1/2 hour or more a day depending on the weather and that helps. The dogs and cats are kept clean and that keeps the smell down nicely.

Do you have the animal hair attachment to your Dyson? We have 2 dogs and 2 cats, so I know animal hair. At least 2 of them get brushed every night. I vacuum every other day. You just have to keep on it. We just had our carpets and furniture professionally cleaned so our house doesn't look or smell like we have pets. Bathing the pets once a month. In the winter, use a dry shampoo if needed. Winter tends to dry out their skin if they are inside. Bathing and brushing helps keep up with the shedding. I open windows for about 30 minutes each day unless it is below freezing outside. I do this especially where all the animals usually are. Just make sure you turn off the furnace first. I hope this helped.

  • A really awesome vacuum is a MUST when you have animals, isn't it?? :-)

I don't vacuum daily...more like every few days. Definitely at least once a week if we're super busy, but normally done twice. No, no hair release formulas. Scented candles are a Godsend, but I have yet to find one that really works well. Luckily, I have two dogs that blow coat twice a year and shed pretty minimally otherwise, so a brushing schedule only happens during that time (Furminator followed by the Zoom Groom - seriously, a GREAT tool for getting just the top coat off!), then other brushing whenever I feel they need it...probably once every ten days or so.

    Fun question!!

We have a Jack Russell x Boxer who used to shed his coat faster than he could grow a new one. I vacuumed twice daily and dusted once a day but the place always looked like the pits. The vet was of no help and I was seriously considering shaving him but then a friend told me about Burns Holistic Food and how it cures seemingly incurable things in domestic pets.

Apparently, constant shedding can be caused by overtoxification of the body. This, in turn, is mostly caused by ingredients the pet food industry add to their foods to pad it out, make it look good to the human eye and smell good to the human nose - but it totally useless and, sometimes, downright dangerous to the dog. I am talking wheat, colourings and flavourings here.

Burns food contains only 100% brown rice, trace minerals, vitamins, meat and dog friendly vegetables - nothing else.

We put Yo-Yo on it and within 3 weeks the incessant moulting stopped- hurray!!! He now only moults twice a year and he smells better, too.

If you need any more info, google Burns Pet Food, ask for a brochure and some samples.

Take it from me, you'll never look back!

My lab mix and staffordshire shed really bad compared to my great dane. We will clean one day then the next day there is a huge pile of fur in the stair corners and behind the chair.

I have had success with the furminator and I try to do that atleast twice a week, but I stay away from the chemicals, especially P&G products. For a nice fragrance, find essential oils(good nutrition has a few) and mix those with water in a spray bottle. Natural stores have a good selection of essential oils.

I vacuum whenever I can, but it gets difficult with the added animals that we feed hay(vacuum can not pick up hay very well).

The swiffer is my best friend, I vacuum and swiffer sometimes twice a day. I dust every other day because the hair seems to settle everywhere. I mope once a week, I don't have carpet any more I do have large area rugs that my brother cleans once a month he's a carpet cleaner. As far as the sprays I like febreze

It's a never ending battle. I do brush my dog daily,

    EDIT.

What ever you do please do not have your lab shaved. This dose not stop shedding it only damages the dogs coat..

l have two Labs, and they never seem to shed at the same time, so l have lots of yellow hairs and then it swaps to chocolate hairs, l never seem to get anytime when the house is shed free!

l do the same, vac daily with my Dyson, sweep and mop, and brush both dogs daily, still end up with loads of hairs. l guess it's just something we have to deal with, l think it's a small price to pay for having two great dogs.

Now with little Alfie l'm going to end up with white hairs as well!

l can't use scented candles or any type of air fresheners, l've got Bob the African Grey and those things are toxic to him, if they don't kill him straight away they will greatly reduce his life span, so it's not worth the risk, just need to make sure they are nice and clean and not smelly dogs, which is easier said than done!

The lengths we have to go to for our furry and feathered friends...LOL

My day job is keeping my home from looking like there are 3 dogs living here. It's a never ending job.

Every day I'm either sweeping and mopping, dusting, cleaning glass surfaces, cleaning soft surfaces, brushing dogs or all of the above. No matter how much time I dedicate to it, by the time I'm done dusting, there's fur in all the corners of all the rooms again. Unless I dust every day, all the wood and glass surfaces look like they've gone a month in a dog free house without being dusted.

I don't have any tricks, other than persistence.

You made an investment in a Dyson so you're pretty much doing all that you can do. My dog is short haired and sheds very little so I can keep up with the shedding with a twice a week vacuuming but you have a lab. That's just the way it goes.
