ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE HELP PLEASE?

Hiya! My bf has installed a stupid virus software other than Norton Anti Virus on the laptop, even though I told him not to,lol.

I'm trying to uninstall it... but it is saying that I will need to "reboot" but obv, I don't want to reboot. Is it just one of these annoying software's that the company don't want people to uninstall? Therefore they're saying the system will have to be rebooted? We really need to get this software off the laptop, as it is really acting up.

Is it ok to go ahead and uninstall?

Any help, much appreciated!!!

xxx

If it's one of the 'antivirus2009' variants then download the following free programs, download, install, update and reboot into Safe Mode to remove:

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

    http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/...

    Select Full Scan.

Remove all infections that it finds after scan.

    SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition:

    http://www.download.com/SUPERAntiSpyware-Free-Edit...

Select Scan your Computer, select your drive and select Perform Complete Scan and remove infections, then click on Preferences, click Repairs Tab and click on any of the System and Browser Repair Items that you may have problems with then click Perform Repair.

    Otherwise reboot then download RevoUninstaller:

    http://www.download.com/Revo-Uninstaller/3000-2096...

It's faster and better than add / remove applet.

When you run it highlight the item then select uninstall in next window select Advanced and click Next, follow prompts when uninstalled it will scan registry and drive for leftover files / folders, click + sign to expand all results and tick ONLY the bold items and follow prompts.

Reboot means you just have to restart your computer. If you don't want it, then uninstall it. Windows usually needs to be rebooted or restarted after any installation/uninstallation. By the way, Norton Antivirus is not even among the best antivirus out there and it consumes a lot of the system resources.

PLEASE, listen to ur bf, I am a certified computer technician, and I know from personal experience that Norton is one of the WORST anti-virus programs on the market, my personal favs are Zone-Alarm and AVG.

    Take care and God bless

oh, and just restart the computer, it makes life easier, trust me, just save anything that needs to be saved first =)

Mike D, I appreciate your bashing of me whole-heartily, however, your claims are ill-based. I too work at a college in northern California and I have, and continue to work with all sorts of AV apps, Norton, AVG, Zone Alarm, McAfee, and several others continuously.

I have a laptop running Vista and a desktop running XP. Vista is considerably worse then ZA, when ZA notifies you, it pops a little bubble near the clock, Vista blots out the whole efin screen!

AVG does in fact find infections whereas Norton doesn't find 1/3 of what AVG or ZA can find. I again thank you for insulting me and I hope you have a nice day

Source(s): First hand experience. God Bless =)

I would assume you should restart. Since some drivers are loaded when the computer is loaded, thus, the uninstall process has to have those drives stopped, one way it does it by stopping those drivers from being loaded in the first place, is during a restart.

After your computer restarts it should continue uninstalling or may already done it automatically.

    Hope This Helps

You will have to reboot. Most antivirus programs you must reboot after the software is uninstalled. Do I get to be your boyfriend for answering? lol just kidding

You do understand that reboot simply means restart, or in layman's terms "turn off and then back on", its not like theyre trying to destroy the laptop, its just part of the uninstallation process. And i personally despise norton antivrus for one, i found it really didnt offer the greatest protection at all.

Reboot means turn off your pc, turn on your pc. It's not the same as re-format, which means wipe everything off.

What's the bf installed? There's better than Norton.

uninstall, from control panel selct the item and click remove. Then load whatever antivirus you want. If you want to download AVG 8 Free you can get it at majorgeeks.com select it from the list and download

In my experience the best two bits of advice are from tyrone k and jsmoe.Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is free and has done a good job for me. Opening in safe mode is advisable before uninstalling - just in case.

'AVG free' is also a good addition to Malwarebyte and if run two together they should keep your PC running OK.
