What is considered a good speed for a baseball pitch?
I don't mean like the glorified 120mph people claim. I mean like a legit top of the MLB today. I've heard most of the top speeds are usually under 92mph. If that is true how do I try out? I think I can gain a lot more speed considering I haven't played since I was 13. At 13 I was throwing in the range of 75 to 78. I got it measured again today and only got 88. But, I haven't really thrown a baseball consistently for over 10 years. The guy there told me that the avg is only 85 for the MLB so I want to hear from a bigger group.

The lowest i've seen is 58 mph by Tim Wakefield and the fastest ive seen in 104 by Joel Zumaya. It can any where between those speeds but thats because Tim Wakefields a knuckleballer. Average I would say 84 - 90 maybe 92. But you cant always just go into the majors throwing really fast, hitters will still be able to hit that. You have to be able to change speeeds and throw batters off. have a good change up and curve or whatever offspeed pitch you want to throw.. Look at Jamie Moyer he changes speeds realy well and hes a great pitcher. Hes probably driven his car faster than hes thrown the ball.

The best speed is the velocity that gets the batter out, and that can be anywhere between 50mph to 100mph. The average fastball in MLB is around 85mph and the better pitchers throwing at that speed are the ones who have the best command of their fastball and can throw strikes.

I have witness Randy Jonson pitch in few fast balls in 95 to 102 range.I have even seen Nolan Ryan throw a fast ball at 101. Even for these guys, these high speed fast ball pitches are rear commodity. I am sure than even Nolan Ryan's average speed in a game is probably around 85 to 90.
Good picthers have assortment of pitchers and just just fast heaters.

I talked to a MLB scout one time (big thrill) and he told me that in young guys they were much more interested in location and technique than speed. They figure that with age and conditioning the speed will come but a guy has to know where to put the ball. Think about Nuke Laloosh in Bull Durham. Better yet, think about Mitch Williams, he had serious speed but he had no control and his time in the limelight was very brief

Well, the lowest I've ever seen in MLB is 72 mph.
Kinda sad for MLB.
But I usually see about 80-98 MPH.
Every now and again I see 100+.
Hope I helped (:
