I don't not know the answer to your question and nor will anyone else unless they work for Microsoft. The problem your having isn't a new one to many people who use this forum. We all have had problems with Windows Media Player and have abandon it in favour of other players. I have four other players on my system now, AVSMedia from Avsmedia.com, DivXPlayer from DivX.com, Nero Media player and PowerDVD. The last two came as part of the software bundle I got when I brought the DVD r/w drive. There are other players you can try that will be recommended by other people. I can only suggest you use another player for viewing DVDs. The PowerDVD player which in my case was part of the software bundle that came with the DVD r/w drive works well. I never actually tried the Nero player.
