The only record that you can see is the record that he was in there.

Whatever else is private info, but what you could do is find out what Division or Corp, what ship he was on, and search for that and find out what they did and see if they mention him. That's what I would do. My Dad was in the Marine Corps which is a Department of the Navy and they have articles in Life magazine and the Leatherneck magazine of the Marine Corp written about him. You might be surprised at what you find. Every man who was and is in the service to our country is responsible for us being free so that we can be on this computer right now. Thank them for their service!

You have to go to the archives...

    http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.ht...

It'll prompt you to fill out a form. You'll need as much information as you can find about your grandfather. At least his social security number. And no doubt, for Privacy Act stuff, you'll probably be required to establish your relationship. And, since you're not the Veteran, there might be a nominal fee.

Here's a caveat: Your mom or dad (whichever is his child) has a better chance of getting the documentation. They're considered "next of kin."

People may suggest the VA or VFW. I don't know their sources, but the above site is where his official records are going to be kept.

  • I will add that descendants are listed. The real caveat is that if your Grandfather is still alive you need to have him make the request.

A BIG PS: Should anyone mention the 1973 fire do not worry. The Navy records were not in that area.

I got a doc of my Dads just by requesting it online. I did have to sign a doc stating I was who I said, other than that they took my word and sent the doc.

Having his Army Serial number and SSN did not hurt either.
