Are salt licks for horses, safe for dogs?

My dog loves to lick anything salty. Whether it be dirty undies, a pillow case, or even your skin. It's the salt! So I'm wondering if the salt licks for horses are safe for dogs. Thanks!

the only thing a dog will eat that is bad for him knowingly is anti-freeze. Your dog should be ok. make sure there is plenty of water for him to drink.

I can't believe there is so much confusion about salt even a vet says no and I disagree with the vet

I got a neighbor dog who licks my hand too

I'm goona give the owner a doggy salt lick for him.....I never seen or heard of a cow or horse getting sick from a mineral lick, that's why I disagree.....living beings cannot live without salt/minerals, or we will perish

I haven't seen horses or cows with problems from licking salt? So why would a dog? Don't the dogs know when to stop licking? I think I'm going to try and find a salt lick for my dogs and see for myself? I would go to the vet, But have you seen the prices they charge to do blood work? Or any other work?

I paid a vet to check out one of my dogs, $49.00 for a check up. All she did was listen to her heart? Really? That's it? I paid that much for that little? Not again....

I would think that its safe for both. I used to put salt blocks out for the cows and they were also used by the horses. I never had a dog like salt, I would have him checked by the Vet Maybe he has some sort of mineral deficiency?

I would imagine if the dog has unlimited access it could seriously screw up their kidneys. But a rare treat lick or two probably wouldn't kill him if he's only allowed to lick it a few times before it's hidden away again. I still wouldn't recommend it.

mmm, my puppy is the same way, he loves underwear, hands, arms, legs and feet.... the thing is tho human salt form our sweaty bodies is different then pure salt like in a salt lick....salt isnt good for dogs, being that they are much smaller then a horse, that it gets to their kidneys and damages them. I dont think it would be a good idea, and my vet says the same thing, to much salt is damaging to anyone not jsut dogs... let him lick your hands he isnt doing ne harm...
