without actually adding how can you tell if the sum of two numbers will be zero?

    If the sum of two numbers is zero, then:

    1. Two numbers are zero.

    2. One number is absolute value of itself. (ex. The absolute value of 1 is -1. Add both numbers and you get zero)

    If both numbers being added are negative the sum will always be negative. If both are numbers are positive sum is positive. If there is one of each the sum will have the sign of the number with the greater absolute value.

    positive number and negati ve number

    number the same, signs different [inverse]

    -1 + 1 = 0

    -2 +2 =0

    -5093823 + 5093823 =0

    They must be the absolute value of each other (in layman terms.... opposites)
