I live about an hour from Gatlinburg and we've been going there on day trips forever as well as overnighters. There are tons of things to do that are inexpensive or that don't cost money. If you love the outdoors/nature, there are several hiking trails in the area. A short easy child-friendly trail (handicap assessible and paved) is Sugarlands Nature Walk past Sugarland's Visitor's Center. The Visitor's Center has a museum, a nice nature trail, and a gift shop. Cades Cove is a lengthy drive, past Gatlinburg but it is a wonderful place to visit. Breathtaking views, old cabins, homesteads, and churches to explore, lots of wild life, more trails. For a day trip, lots of families and church groups will bicycle the loop in Cades Cove. Roaring Fork Motor Trail is good, see all the sights of the Smokies from the comfort of your car...stop at overlooks and waterfalls. If you want a more challengeing hike, Grotto Falls off the Motor trail has some beautiful falls you can actually walk behind. If you like quaint little shops and less crowds got to the Arts & Crafts community. Tons of shops and galleries. Have a great trip!
