How can I make my computer run faster?

My computer has 1.5GB RAM, 80 GB hard drive, Windows XP home edition, Mc Afee anti virus, and has service pack 3 along with all other updates so my computer is about as up-to-date as I can get it without installing vista. I regularly defrag the hard drive, run c cleaner, and delete any unnecessary files that are hogging the hard drive. the hard drive has about 59GB of free space.

How can I make it run faster?

    Add memory, most surefire way.

make sure you are not double firewalled (i.e. McAfee & Windows Firewall).

Keep the virus scan up-todate and make sure you are scanning for spayware regularly.

Be aware of background programs you don't use and shut them off - things like IM programs that are always on or live feed internet media stuff.

Hello. My name is Sanjay Patel, and I currently hold an honorary Master's degree in the field of Computer Science. I am aware of, and have personal knowledge related to your question. There are computer maintenance businesses which are probably in your area, however they come at the cost of hiring a professional to enter your home. There may also be some local destinations where you can drop off your computer and wait to have a technician look at it. These options can often be costly, and pretty inconvenient. The answer to this question can probably be found doing a little extra research on Google.

A well-running computer can be a hard thing to maintain. From my experience, there is but only One software which is reputable- and consistently reliable for healing sick, slow computers. Reimage™ - https://reimagefix.im/ is a world-renown, easy to use software designed by Forensic scientists and made for the average person. This thing will fix literally just about ANY problem you could possibly be having with your PC. Reimage was recommended to me by a Professor during my 2nd year of Graduate school

    1. Disable Indexing Services

Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don’t search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:

    Go to Start

    Click Settings

    Click Control Panel

    Double-click Add/Remove Programs

    Click the Add/Remove Window Components

    Uncheck the Indexing services

    Click Next

    2. Optimise Display Settings

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimise:

    Go to Start

    Click Settings

    Click Control Panel

    Click System

    Click Advanced tab

In the Performance tab click Settings

    Leave only the following ticked:

    Show shadows under menus

    Show shadows under mouse pointer

    Show translucent selection rectangle

Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop

Use visual styles on windows and buttons

    3. Speedup Folder Browsing

You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:

    Open My Computer

    Click on Tools menu

    Click on Folder Options

    Click on the View tab.

Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box

    Click Apply

    Click Ok

    Reboot your computer

    4. Disable Performance Counters

Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several areas of your PC’s performance. These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a good idea.

    To disable:

download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List

Then select each counter in turn in the ‘Extensible performance counters’ window and clear the ‘performance counters enabled’ checkbox at the bottom.button below

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.pcboostcleaner.com/

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

There may be two reasons why your PC is running slow.

    1. You havn't cleant up your PC for a long time.

    2. You have got a virus or spyware on your PC.

You may search WWW.answers.yahoo.com for answers

I suggest you to run a virus test firstly with your virus scanner:(if you don't have virus killer, you may try Bitdefender, it is the best:

    1. Firstly, update your virus scanner database

    2. Then run the scanner and check whether you have virus on your PC.

When you find viruses, Kill them!

    3.Then Restart your Computer.

Now you'll find your PC is faster than before,

    If not.

You may definetly need to clean up your PC.

Here is instructions about how to clean your PC: http://www.wikihow.com/Clean-Your-Comput...

    1. Download a nice PC cleaner from http://www.pc-registry-repair.cc/

(System cleaner is a best choice)

    2. Run the cleaner and clean up your PC.

    3. Restart your PC

xp supports up to 3gb, so another 1.5gb would help out. RAM is the quickest/cheapest/easiest way to get some speed.

Also find out what the fastest cpu is that your motherboard will support and upgrade to that.

thats about it. other than those things, it kinda depends on perception, if it is running slower than a computer with those specs should, then there's a bunch of other stuff to investigate. but if it is running happy and healthy at what those specs should then there's not much more to do.
