i bought a new net gear router and hp won't help because my warranty is out. all of the lights on the router are like they should be but my laptop says that it can not connect to the server.

I would call netgear tech support because they can probably help guide you through it better than anyone on here can.
Their number is 1-888-netgear (1-888-638-4327 ). As long as you bought the router within the last 90 days it should be free.
