Depending on the value of the car and how wealthy you are, you should at least put comprehensive coverage on the car while it is sitting. If you have lots of money and can afford the loss of the car due to fire, theft, vandalism, weather related claims then no comprehensive insurance is needed

Contact your insurance agent before you go to get the car. Legally, you must have insurance the moment the vehicle leaves the dealers lot. If you have a wreck on the way home, the finance company will look to you for the payments even if the car is totaled. If the car is damaged, you could be responsible for repairs, towing and storage fees. If you hit someone, you are personally responsible for damages and medical expenses if deemed at fault, and will be cited for driving without insurance. There are ways that the insurance companies can deal with a policy for a new vehicle, and you can stop off at the agents office to provide the VIN. Some companies require their agents to perform a damage inspection and visually check the VIN to be sure of what they are insuring. Shop around, call several companies for the best rate and be legal.

Sure. The problem is you can't get registration without insurance in some states, and unregistered cars can get towed, driven or not.
For sure you can't leave it parked on the road, and some communities don't allow unlicensed cars even in your own driveway.

How are you going to get the car home if you don't drive yet?
Normally, (unless you go to a hole in the wall auto dealer)...you must have proof of insurance before you drive the vehicle off the lot.

Well, the first thing an insurance agent is going to ask you for is your drivers license number. They have to run a drivers history to determine your policies prices. Slow down there chief! One thing at a time. Get the license, then the car, then the ins.

If you do not have a loan on the car, you do not need insurance if you keep the car parked on your private property.

If you barrow money from a bank for the car , the bank will require it. If you pay cash you can get away with it but you will pay a penalty because you have to have proof of insurance to get it tagged.
