Need help with my dog and her eating habits!!?

My dog is female and she is almost 4 months old. She eats really fast and doesn't slow down. I feed her 2 cups a day, and only once a day. She is about 15 lbs right now. Will she slow down? How do I help her? Am I not feeding her enough? How do I make it so I can fill her bowl and she will only eat what she needs throughout the day? Thank you! She is a heeler/chow mix, and will get to be about 30 lbs?

When a dog eats too fast, it can be a serious problem. Your dog can choke, swallow so much air that they vomit or even develop bloat, which can be life threatening. Preventing your dog from eating too fast is an important part of properly caring for your pet yet can seem challenging, I know. But there are things that you can do to prevent your dog from eating too fast.

If your dog eats too fast, but seems manageable; you could opt to feed your dog by hand, literally. Place a few kibble in your hand at a time and allow the dog to eat from your hand.

Another method would be to put a small amount of water into the dry kibble. Again, they will need to work at it a bit more but it also has the added benefit of releasing the gases formed when producing most kibble (compacting it). Extruded kibble is the exception to this and it's hard to find. By releasing these gases, you also decrease the chance of bloat (gastric torsion).

Some owners find that free feeding kibble to a fast eater will take away the misperceived need of "I gotta hurry before it isn't there anymore". But please monitor this, especially in the beginning.

Most dogs look like they are starving and can probably eat as much you give them. However following the instruction on how much you feed her should be fine. Hope this helps.

if she is eating a lot, has no worms, but has a body condition score or 4 or 5 the vet will tell you to continue your feeding regimen.

if she has worms, you need to worm her. if you don't know bring a fecal sample to the vet where they will examine it under a microscope for parasite eggs.

if her body condition score is over 6+ then you need to lower her food intake.

also, since some feeds have less nutrients your pet will eat more of it. the vet will tell you that Iams and Science Diet are the best brands, so your dog will need to eat less of them.

if she eats so rapidly that you worry about her choking, put a golf ball in her bowl. it will force her to take smaller mouthfulls.

I agree w/ the first poster. 2 cups for a pup, is actually way too much. Research what your breed actually weighs and health conditions. Pups should only be eating about 1 cup food, 1x/day.

    Def. call your vet.

    Good Luck!

Most dogs will eat too much, and become obese. Only feed your dog what your vet tells you is the correct amount to keep her healthy and lean.

2 cups for a 15lb puppy seems a bit much, talk to your vet. dogs tend to eat fast, don't let dogs graze on their food all day. have two or three (for puppies) seperate feeding times.
