Why can't I donate part of my liver to my dad?
My dad has Cirrhosis of the liver and we will be very lucky to have him around for Christmas. He's in the End-stage of Liver failure.
Why can't I donate some of my liver if I was a match? Why wouldn't that help him?
A doctor did say no one could give him part of a liver, but I forget for what reason. My grandmother had told me and but I have so much on me, I forgot :(
I just don't understand why it can't be done.

have you asked his doctors if you could get tested to see if you are a match and healthy enough to donate?
if not then ask them. if so and they said you couldn't what ever reason they gave you is the reason you can't.
*EDIT*
well tomorrow ask someone that knows (such as your grandmother) to re explain it to you.
then you will understand cuz they will tell you why you can't.
then so you don't forget again right it down.
and i hope your dad gets a liver somehow. and i'm sure god will take care of him and help all of you recover from this whole situation.
good luck and god bless i'll be thinking of your father.

I was in the end stage of liver failure myself and will make some suggestions that might help you. First, if you have not already done this, go to a transplant center with your father. He needs to go through an evaluation to see if he is well enough to receive a transplant. He needs to be treated for his disease by a good hepatologist which is a doctor that specializes in liver disease. Many primary care physicians and even gastroenterologists do not know that much about cirrhosis, so a hepatologist is the one you want. You can find experts in this disease at a transplant center or hospitals that do transplants.
If you father is OK to receive a transplant, then you can find out if you could be a donor for him. You don't say why your father has cirrhosis, but if it is due to alcoholism, then he must have at least 6 months of proven sobriety before they will do anything to him in the line of receiving a transplant. If everything is OK and they will consider a live donor for him, then you would have to go through an evaluation process just like your father. It is a very serious surgery and the donor must be in excellent health.
There are 2 things that are required in order to be a match for a liver transplant. That is blood type and body size. A large man could not donate to a small petite woman, but a man can donate to a woman as long as they are similar in size.
Wish you and your father the best. I had a transplant 2 years ago and am doing great today.

There is a procedure where a living person can donate part of their liver. This procedure is only effective for certain types of liver problems. The link lists the hospitals that perform liver transplants. Maybe you could contact one or more of those hospitals to get more info.
