Nikon D50 is hard to beat. It is regularly selling for $200 in the aftermarket. Couple that to a 50mm F/1.8 and you have a performance set-up for under $300.

(If you have 5 Franklins you could get the D40 but it does not have a built-in AF motor.)

I recommend Nikon because you can use a legacy of lenses that goes back to the 1960s.

I'm a beginner at DSLRs too. Before buying my camera, I did my "research" and read reviews of various cameras on www.dpreview.com. (Many entry level cameras are rated as Highly Recommended, by the way).

I was about to buy my first DSLR when I asked that question here at Yahoo! Answers. Most of the reply I got told me to buy a Nikon D40 or a D60. Both has what you are looking for : automatic and manual settings.

The most affordable one is the D40. It is easy to use and is lightweight. The D60 costs a little more but comes with additional features.

I am thankful for those who recommended Nikon to me. They were right. I am happy with my D60. I recently met an acquaintance of mine who has a D40. He too was hapy with his purchase.

Check it out at a store. You might "fall in love" with Nikon too.

    Good luck.

    We have a Nikon D-70

We normally use it in the auto mode or sports mode - have not learned to do individual settings.

    It takes great pictures.
