Can you recommend a good eye wash for the elderly? My 94 year old mother gets a lot of gunk in her eyes . ?

She has severe macular degeneration and the eye docs have not been able to help her. When she was 90, we quit going because the visits were so hard on her (also severe arthritis and now is incontinent) so taking her back to the eye clinic is a last resort. Her eyes are full of sticky crude in the morning and she can barely open them. We clean them out good at bed time and use artificial tears and an ointment for dryness, but it no longer does the job.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. This is very frustrating for her.

Make sure her eyes are staying moisturized during the day. Genteal brand has good line of drops ranging from mild to severe dryness. Use the drop 3-4 times a day, and more frequently if she's reading or watching tv. Then try the Genteal PM ointment at night. Only a very little bit is needed -- a lot of people make the mistake of using too much (which is easy to do) and wake up with a lot of gunk in the eye. Also, in the eye drop area at Walmart, or your local drug store should be eyelid scrubs -- the brand name is OcuSoft. Try using these in the mornings, and in the evening before the ointment, if needed. If these don't work, she may have a case of blepharitis, and if it's possible for her to get into the ophthalmologist's office, he would be able to prescribe a prescription ointment as well.

Look for a solution at your pharmacy called "boric acid" It isn't an acid that will burn or anything like that. It is actually very soothing. use cotton balls to apply it. Check with your pharmacist to find it.
