A psychologist is not necessarily the same thing. There are different schools of psychology. A psychologist is very general. Psychologists study behavior and mental processes.

A psychoanalyst specifies in Sigmind Freud's school of psychology - it deals with the unconscious mind.

A psychiatrist is someone who specializes in mental disorders and has a MD. They're able to prescribe medicine.

Psychiatrists go to Med school. They can prescribe drugs (some states allow psychologists to prescribe them as well, and more will in the future.) Psychoanalysts are kind of a branch of psychology. Psychology is like the umbrella, there are various schools of psychology within it. Psychoanalysis is one, there is clinical, school psychology, etc.
