For college apps--what is the definition of a "dependent" child? ?

For one of the apps I'm filling out, it asks how many "dependent" children there are in my household. My brother is a full time student and is thus still dependent on my parents; however, he is 23. Does this mean he is a dependent child, just because he is technically a child of my parents? Or is he not considered a child because he is over 18?

If they are claimed as a dependent on their tax forms from last year they are dependent. If you file your own taxes and don't claim as dependent of someone else you are not. That is what they want an answer to. It will establish your financial aid level.

Only if you are totally dependent on your parents. I was a dependent of my parents at 25 and lived on my own. It depends of the college too. Just call and ask them.
