Question about selective service registration?
If an 18 year old is the only son and still in high school do they still have to register?
I thought there was something about not being able to take an only son because of not being able to carry on the family name if something were to happen?
Also, even if he did have brothers and we did come up on a draft, would they pull him out of school for that?

If you are a man ages 18 through 25 and living in the U.S., then you must register with Selective Service. It’s the law. You can register at any U.S. Post Office and do not need a social security number.
"Only Sons" and the draft
Contrary to popular belief, "only sons," "the last son to carry the family name," and "sole surviving sons" must register and they can be drafted. However, they may be entitled to a peacetime deferment if there is a military death in the immediate family.
Provisions regarding the survivors of veterans were written into Selective Service law after World War II. Details have varied over the years, but the basic premise remains the same; where a family member has been lost as a result of military service, the remaining family members should be protected insofar as possible.
It is important to keep in mind that the provisions are directly related to service-connected deaths. The mere fact that a man is the only child or only son does not qualify him for exemption - he must be the survivor of one who died as a result of military service.
IT sucks that women are not mandated to register JUST like the MEN with whom they demand total equality . I admire the women that enlist and get commissioned, they deserve 100% equality and our respect!
FYI: I was an only son of a US Army SFC that died of combat elated injuries in 1975. My grandfather was killed at Belleau Wood (WW!). I lost 2 cousins in Vietnam. All the same, I enlisted & did Grenada, Beirut, Desert Shield/ Storm and Panama. I didn't worry about getting wasted, I got my asx in gear and waded into the sh*t with the rest of my Marines and Airmen!
(NOTE: those that fixate on possibly dying, usually get dead because they are watching their own or their buddies' SIX)

All males are required to register on their 18th birthday. It doesn't not matter if they are the only child, still in high school or anything else. The requirement is they must register. The odds of them being called upon are currently pretty low.

Yes,even illegal immigrants are supposed to register.Depending if your son has a disability ect.: or they will consider he is the only son.however my son does not want to be drafted but says he will not watch his friends go without him.Very hard .but a decision a man must make.God bless.
