What to do with grape vines?
The grape vines where I live have gone dormant for the winter. Do I prune them back some? They are all over the place and dead looking and I want them to grow better next year.

Yes, you can prune if you want. I either prune mine now, or in the spring works well too. It might not be the 'proper' time to do it but it's never hurt my vines. I agree they tend to too stragly when their leaves are gone.

While the grape is dormant, prune all woody growth back by around 2/3 (two thirds). Grapes begin to form on the previous years growth. You will find that the grapevines wood has died completely! However, don't worry, this is what is suppose to happen.
Pruning encourages new and better growth the following season, and is necessary to 'thicken' up the trunk and base of the vine. It is also vital for the production of grapes.
Pruning before frosts don't affect the plant in a negative way.
Remember to liquid fertilize the grape at first sign of new growth, and keep the water up to it in the production of the grapes. This will ensure a bigger, better tasting grape! Remember to use an organic fertilizer on your food-producing plants!
Cheers =)

Always remember that grapes grow on 1 year old growth, so prune all but the strongest stems, and if they are not branching the way you want-pinch back new growth to encourge the shape and branches you would like. After you have a strong few stems, cut back the top to encourage new stems to sprout for future growth.

I trim mine back in early spring, I think leaving the dead vines now protect the plant during the winter and it gets really cold here sometimes.
