Severe, sudden leg cramping while sleeping?

Last night the weirdest thing happened. In the middle of the night, my calf muscle suddenly (and it happened really fast, it was not gradual) cramped up. It hurt a lot, and it felt like I had just pulled the muscle or something (hehe, i think I even screamed). Anyways, I was able to fall back asleep and when I woke it still hurt, but after moving around a bit it felt a little better.

Can anyone tell me what the heck happened? It sounds kinda like a charlie horse, but this happened really suddenly, and the pain (though really severe) did not last long (It started feeling better by midday).

So, anybody know?

Common causes of Charlie Horses are dehydration, too much caffeine or too much booze as well as a deficiency of potassium (bananas), calcium (dairy products), magnesium (nuts) or vitamin B6 (dairy products).

Nightime leg cramps are common, experts don't know exactly what causes them. But most of the time it is not because of illness. Some of the things that may cause leg cramps include:

Getting too much exercise or overusing the muscles.

Standing on concrete for a long time, sitting for a long time, or putting your legs in awkward positions while you sleep.

Not having enough potassium, calcium, and other minerals in your blood.Being dehydrated, which means your body has lost too much fluid.Taking certain medicines, such as antipsychotics, diuretics, statins, and steroids.Having flat feet.Having thyroid disease.

How can you stop a nighttime leg cramp when it happens?

You may need to try several different ways to stop a leg cramp before you find what works best for you. Here are some things you can try:

Walk around, or jiggle your leg.

Stretch your calf muscles. You can do this stretch while you sit or stand:

While sitting, straighten your leg and flex your foot up toward your knee. It may help to place a rolled towel under the ball of your foot and, while holding the towel at both ends, gently pull the towel toward you while keeping your knee straight.

While standing about 0.5 m (2 ft) from a wall, lean forward against the wall. Keep the knee of the affected leg straight and the heel on the ground. Do this while you bend the knee of the other leg. See a picture of how to do this calf stretch.

These exercises stretch your calf muscles, and you will probably feel the leg cramp go away after a few minutes.

Some people find that a hot shower or a warm bath helps. Others get relief by rubbing the calf with an ice pack.

    How can you prevent them?

Use these tips to help prevent nighttime leg cramps:

Drink plenty of water and other fluids during the day.

Limit or avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine. These can make you dehydrated, which means your body has lost too much fluid.

Make sure you are eating healthy foods (especially if you are pregnant) that are rich in calcium, potassium, and magnesium.

Ride a stationary bike to condition and stretch your muscles.

Stretch your leg muscles for a few minutes before you go to bed.

Some people find that it helps to drink about 0.2 L (7 fl oz) of tonic water, which contains a small amount of quinine, each night.

If you are taking medicines that are known to cause leg cramps, your doctor may prescribe different medicines.

If your leg cramps bother you a lot, your doctor may prescribe medicines that calm leg nerves or relax the muscles.

What if nighttime leg cramps keep coming back?

Talk with your doctor if you have muscle cramps that keep coming back, are severe, or occur in other muscles of your body. These may be symptoms of another problem.

You should check this Sciatica Natural Treatment

    http://cure-sciatica.info/

Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication

I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.

I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica. Try a reputable chiropractor ASAP!

This usually happens because a person is dehydrated or because the person temporarily depleted magnesium in the muscles due to over-use. Boosting fluids and stretching are usually sufficient to stop this, but sometimes a magnesium supplement at bedtime is needed. Magnesium is the electrolyte that is needed to make muscles relax.

Many people mistakenly attribute this problem to a shortage of potassium, which is not true - potassium is needed for muscles to contract.

You may need a bit more salt in your diet.

When the cramp happens, do not point your toe. Try pulling your toes up toward your shin and back to flat again. This may help loosen it up while it is happening. You can also stand on the edge of a stair with your toes clinging on and then slowly lower your heels to stretch the muscles in your calves.
