External hard drive, speeding up computers?
my computer is really slow!!! my friend gave me Lord of the rings online to put onto it, i have installed it and my character can barley move as it is so slow. i have spent about 20 hours deleting unwanted files, cookies, history, screen-savers, reducing graphic options on the game and the computer. i have CCleaner to delete errors and stuff. and the computer doesn't have a virus. it's just old and slow. i have also ran the defrag application as well as C-Clean up provided by Microsoft. it is still as slow as ever
would an external hard-drive solve the problem? if i transferred all of the personal files to the external hard drive leaving only the game on the computer, will it be the same speed as if it were new? or at least more faster.
can anyone suggest any other options ( dont say a new computer, we're poor) perhaps a softweare that can help?

You are trying to run a very modern game that requires a fast moving CPU to do all the calculations that are needed for it. You are basically running up against a brick wall. The only thing that you could do to make your computer faster would be to add more RAM to help with the large amount of calculations. Also your graphics card is probably just not up to the task of running that game. Deleting files only really helps when you are running out of storage space. A windows computer will slow down drastically once you reach into the last 25% of storage on the computer. Some windows computers and hard drives will begin to crash once you reach into the last 10%. So NEVER fill up a windows computer past the last 10% of storage. I suggest you just buy a new computer if you want to run that game. I buy most all my computer stuff from a local outlet of Microcenter. But they are mainly a mail order company so you can buy from them anywhere. Once you get a new computer, I suggest you also run a dual boot system with some form of Linux OS. I run Ubuntu. Use the Linux system to surf the net and do most day to day tasks. And use the Windows OS for gaming. The Linux OS does not get viruses, spyware, or malware. So it is the safest way to be online. Plus Linux OS's are FREE. So you have nothing to lose.
Get a nice 64bit system even a quadcore if you can afford it. Also get a GOOD video card if you are going to be gaming. You will need it.

The most important thing you can do to make your computer run faster is to install more memory (RAM). You don't say how much you have, but with virus checkers and automatic updates, 1 GB is the minimum. 2GB is better. You should also check msconfig (search for tips on how to use it) to make sure you don't have a bunch of worthless stuff clogging up your RAM at start up.
Moving infrequently used files to external storage will only help if you have less than 5-10% free space on your computer.

Check to see what other software is running at the same time. If there are a lot of background software programs running, it will slow down the speed of your computer.
As long as there is enough extra space on your hard disk for the game program to swap info back and forth to memory, gaining more hard disk space won't help the speed problem.

If you install the game in an external hard drive, it would probably run slower as it's going to have a much slower connection. Maybe you need to upgrade your video card. If you're using just an onboard graphics card, it would really be slow.

no external drives do not speed up pcs
but by putting your extra data on will help
windows want 20% to 30% free space to work at its most efficient

Your problem lies with the demands of the game, not the capacity of your hard drive,
New computer, with decent graphics card, is the answer.

hard drives dont make computers faster, you need to upgrade your RAM, video card or CPU
