Hypoallergenic dogs fact or fiction?

2 hours and 30 minutes ago, 1;30 est Yahoo issued a statement from Dr Samuel Friedlander of University Hospitals, Case Medical Centers, announced that there is absolutely no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog.

Allergies are caused by dander not fur as some ppl think, and some dogs produce more dander then others.

what do you think fact or fiction?

No such thing as a hypoallergenic dog- they don't exist. All dogs, scientifically, produce the same amount of allergenic proteins (relative to size), it is apparently the grooming differences that make some dogs less likely to cause a reaction than others: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27685017/

Dr. Friedlander is right, they don't exist. However, there are some breeds of dog that people with allergies find less irritating than others. Some terrier breeds have a more "wiry" fur that is fairly similar to human hair, and don't produce as much dander because their skin makes slightly different oils for that hair(airedale terriers, for example). There are also the maltese, they are pretty much as close to hypoallergenic as you can get(and I have two for that reason).

One breed I've been rather curious about allergy-wise is the Chinese Crested Dog. Do the patches with no fur produce as much dander? Ah well, I'm supposed to be answering the question, not asking another! :P

I'm not sure but I do know that dogs that don't shed help greatly with people with dog allergies. I do know some people that are allergic to the saliva from a dog. So I think it depends on what someone is allergic to whether it be their saliva, dander or fur.

Honestly....I'm not sure...I was always told that some dogs where because they had hair like humans that kept growing rather than fur that will grow out then shed or break off....Would be something interesting to research again! I have heard of some people having certain dogs and not have allergy problems with them like they did with other dogs.
