well, it does contain poison to kill the lice, so i would be certain that is what she has. you will also have to get the rinse that will unstick the nits from the hair shafts. these have to all be combed off with a special comb that is usually provided with the kit. to check for lice, bend her head forward and carefully separate or part her hair at the back of her neck. the lice are tiny and hard to see, but the nits (eggs) show up very well under a black-light or with a magnifying glass an flashlight. they are in little casings stuck around the hair. they will not simply brush out. be sure that you and her mother check for age recommendations on the kit. i hope its not. no fun, wash all bedding and towels and clothes. check other children in the house. been there done that, good luck.

Your cousin may simply have a dry, itchy scalp. If there are no lice, the lice shampoo may not do any real harm, but it's pretty harsh and may intensify her itching. It's pretty easy to spot lice. Simply have her bend over and inspect her hair closely, parting it in several places. If she has lice, you will see them, or at least their eggs, which can be seen clinging to the hair shaft, usually close to the scalp. Don't worry . . .I've done this hundreds of times and never gotten lice myself.

If you don't spot any bugs, try having your cousin use a moisturizing shampoo designed for itchy scalp, like Head and Shoulders. If the irritation persists, she should see her doctor.

No, do not expose her to the treatment if you're not sure she has lice. It is an insecticide.

You can remove the dandruff easily but not the eggs. Get a magnifying glass if you need to see better. Also a flashlight will help. I had better luck seeing the lice, because they're usually moving.
