Purina Pro Plan or Science Diet?
I am currently feeding my 1 year old chihuahua Pro Plan dog food, but I had a lab that was on Science diet. The one thing I remember about the Science Diet was that the poop didn't smell. Any thoughts?
We have only had her for two weeks, and she's our first inside dog.

i have 3 chihuahuas and 2 of them eat natures recipe venison and rice...which is really good for the skin and allergies, b/c it has no fillers or preservatives and it has no beef chicken wheat or corn...which some dogs are allergic to. and my other one eats bil-jac, which is an excellent food, he eats less of it and actually poops less b/c it is more filling than pro plan crap. bil-jac also has molasses in it which is good for the eyes. you should look for a food that has a meat product as its first ingredient and not corn...which is the first and most ingredient in most cheaper dog foods. you should get your dog food from a pet store such as petsmart, they can help you pick a food that is right for your dog, and it will be a better quality food which will be better in the long term for your dog.

Quite honestly, and you probably won't want to hear this, but both of these are absolutely horrible foods so the answer is: c) none of the above. Both Purina and Hill's (Science Diet) use proteins (meats) that are 4D which means not fit for human consumption. These are meats that are cancerous, these are euthanized animals, these are animals who have died with horrible diseases - all of it goes into Hill's and Purina. The grains they use are the worst of the worst and the byproducts used in the foods could literally not be any worse. What goes into Purina and Hill's is nothing more than salvage. Our dogs deserve to be fed Real food. Whether you choose raw or commercial, just choose something that's made with real ingredients.
Good luck!

I don't like pro plan or science diet. They are "store bought) food. Buy your pup food from a pup/pet shop. Read the ingredients on the food you have now.Its like giving your dog fast food take out. It has nothing but fillers. The first ingredient should be meat...not corn. I like WELLNESS,i run a pup shop and all my babies eat it. I add about 2 spoons of wet(wellness can) to the dry to add flavor. You can also nuke it for 30-40 seconds...Everyone likes a hot meal.If your pup shop does not carry wellness, ask for a good natural food. read the ingredients

I would go with Pro Plan. I prefer the ingredients to Science Diet. But I wouldn't feed either to my dog
Science diet has a lot of grains and corns, which generally dogs have trouble digesting (also means more poop for you to pick up). Pro Plan isn't significantly better but meat is the first ingredient.
Keeping your dog on a meat-content food with low fillers (includes corn and grains) will make them poop less and it wont be as messy. Its gross to talk about but true, lol!

Both are junk garbage. Look at the ingredients. I bet they both have corn, by products, wheat, gleutens, soy and other fillers and un named meats. Always look for a named meat to be the first ingredient without any of the above in the food.
Examples of good foods are Wellness, Canidae, solid gold, Innova, Evo, Eagle Pack holistic, Blue Buffalo, Timberwolf. Petco has alot of good quality foods.

How about neither?
**Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to the dump cheap leftovers and things that aren't safe for human consumption (from human food processing plants) into their foods. Will it kill your dog? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot.
Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.
Thankfully, there are some excellent dog foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human consumption.
Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Nutro, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Kibbles n' Bits, Beneful, Ol'Roy.
Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae All Life Stages, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature's Variety Prairie, Nature's Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix, Timberwolf Organics.
Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you're getting what you're paying for. Less filler material means more concentrated nutrients... this means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!
Before following your vet's food recommendation, keep in mind that vets get /very/ little nutritional training during their schooling. Besides that, what training they /do/ get is usually sponsored or taught by the crappy pet food companies! They also often get paid to sell some of their products at their clinics (Science Diet, Royal Canin etc.)
A great option is to go with an entirely grainless diet. Many of the high quality foods now put out grainless formulas. Some good grainless diets include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature's Variety Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Merrick Before Grain, Canidae Grain Free All Life Stages, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now! and Sold Gold Barking At The Moon, Taste of the Wild.
Some pretty decent foods can even be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic, Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux Organix, Pinnacle, and Halo. If you can't find a food, most of the high quality food brands have websites with store locators on them.
Another option, if you can't find anywhere around you that sells good foods, is to order your pet food online. Here's an excellent place to do so: http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/
Remember that foods should be switched gradually (mixing new slowly in with the old over about a two week period), especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies.
Another option for feeding dogs is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:

I don't like either brand of food.
There are lots of high quality foods out there. I feed my dogs www.bluebuff.com fish and sweet potato and they LOVE it
I am sure you will get lots of different opinions on this. Pick what works best for your dog

If you are looking for a "cheaper" fair quality dog food I suggest Kirklands brand its sold at costco and though it isnt a holistic food its way better than iams, purina, SD, ol'roy ect.
its about $0.52 a pound
