Help! My shih-tzu has had diarrhoea for the past two weeks!?

First the vet said it was pancreatitis, and put her on a diet of science diet i/d dog food. The diarrhoea stopped for a day but came back the next day. Then the vet said it was bacteria and put her on antibiotics and z/d dog food. That didn't help either. The diarrhoea stopped for a while only, and then returned with mild vomitting. The vets can't help anymore. Anybody been through something similar? My shih-tzu is 4 years old.

Did they vets tell you they can't help anymore or is this your opinion? Usually they will refer you to a specialist to help your dog. You can try a college that specializes in Veterinary medicine. They have clinics and doctors that will help you. Vets do not give up on their patients. Instead they will give the owners options for treatments. Then it is up to you to take the next step. If it was me, I would be knocking down doors to find a working treatment that would help my dog. Your dog needs professional help, so make it your mission to get help.

You definitely need to get a new vet. Have your dog tested for Giardia. It's a parasitic disease that dogs can pick up from contaminated water and from other dog's poop. Diarrhea is a symptom. My Yorkiepoo had it. It can be treated with meds and there is a vaccine your dog can get to keep from catching it again.

My first vet couldn't diagnose it. We tried several antibiotics, changing food, etc. but nothing worked. The diarrhea kept coming back. Went to a new vet, he ran the test and my dog was positive for Giardia. That was 2 years ago, he's been fine since! (Be careful because if iyour dog does have giardia, people can catch it too.) Good luck!

1st step is to find another vet. If your current vet is unable to assist you any further, find one that can. You can ask friends for references. Your dog has something going on with her GI tract and you need to get this resolved asap. Consistent diarrhea can tear apart their GI system and also lead to dehydration, and that can lead to a whole other slew of issues including organ failure. Switching food to a better quality may help but you also may want to add a bacterial supplement to reestablish a bacterial flourish, this is why docs recommend eating yogurt when you are taking antibiotics. Antibiotics also kill the helpful bacteria in your digestive system. Did your vet take x-rays, to rule out any tumors or blockages? Good luck with your dog,

A good dog food such as innova, or wellness its not full of fillers like science diet purina ect. and it may help to give a spoon full of plain yogurt to aid in digestion

ADD: Dont give MILK- Dogs and cats do not have the proper enzymes to properly break down the sugar in milk which is called 'lactose.' You may have heard of people who are lactose-intolerant. They are also missing these digestive enzymes. If the proper enzymes are not present, the lactose remains undigested and tends to ferment in the intestine and cause diarrhea. Some pets can tolerate a little milk, others, none at all

Be sure that the dog stays hydrated through all of this. And if I were you i'd be looking for a different vet. This could very well be a twisted intestine or blocked type of thing. Also a dog like this should never be fed table scraps, not that you have been ... but like my Karin Terrier, she got colitis from table scraps I found out it could have killed her :(

    Good luck with your pooch!

I would take the dog to a different vet. Inflammatory bowel disease can cause diarrhea all the time. There are other medical problems that can cause this. Also changing foods can cause it temporarily.

Your vet is the best person to help you with that because he or she can do a stool analysis to see if there are still worms and it might be a different kind. You did great making a new appointment. Take your puppy to the vet ASAP. Take care of yourself and your puppy.

Of course a vet can help, see another one. We are not medical experts here, and cannot answer your questions.

I have a shih-tzu too and they ALL have problems going potty, just give her a tiny bit of milk and that should help, also just feed her something else like dog.
