identify 1972 Oldsmobile engine?
How to do it? Is it a 403 or a 350 Rocket engine? Also, where is cylinder # 1? Thanks.

look for the id# on the intake.then look in the repair manual. no.# 1 is furthest from the transmission

Won't be a 403, that engine was not made until approx 1979.
The number one cyl is on the farthest foward cylinder head on the engine... I believe that is the first cyl on the left(driver's)side of the engine.
Could actually be a 455 if it came out of a full size like a olds 98 or station wagon.
